15 WordPress FAQs for Beginners

When I first started working in social media management and blog/website creating, I was super confused. I finally wrote an ebook about it answer all the questions about WordPress I could think of when I was first starting out. WordPress can be overwhelming for many, but it doesn’t have to be. Not if you have help! This article features the top 15 frequently asked questions by WordPress beginners!

1. Where is the plugins menu in the admin panel?

There are several reasons why you can’t find it. First, if your blog is on WordPress.com, then you can’t add plugins. If you’re using a self-hosted WordPress, then you might not have the admin level required to access the plugins tab.

2. My website shows a blank screen and I am locked out of my wp-admin.

This usually happens when you paste a code using the wrong format, or you pasted the code in the wrong location. Since you’re locked out of WordPress, you’ll need to use FTP to fix your theme’s file.

3. After I upgraded WordPress, I don’t see areas like authors, Custom Fields, etc.

The new version of WordPress comes with a cleaner user interface. Some options are automatically unchecked by default, which is why you can’t see them. What you should do is to go to the Screen Options tab, and then check the fields you want displayed on your site.

4. My Facebook Like button is showing a different title/image.

OK, the first thing you need to realize that this is not a problem with WordPress. It’s possible the Facebook script cannot get the right info for your website. You should get another plugin, preferably the Simple Facebook Connect plugin which is very easy to use and doesn’t need any configuring. Or, you can use the WordPress SEO Plugin as this comes with a social feature.

5. My website loads very slowly. Is there a way to speed it up?

There are many things you can do to speed up your website, one of these being to use a caching plugin for WordPress, like the W3 Total Cache. You can also use a Content Delivery Network provider and get a better web host. If your website gets a lot of traffic, you should also consider getting a dedicated server.

6. How do I install Google Analytics?

You can install Google Analytics in a self-hosted WordPress, but not on WordPress.com. This however, comes with a built-in feature called WordPress.com Stats which is quite similar to Google Analytics.

7. Can I set up email subscriptions for my WordPress blog?

Yes, and there are several ways you can do so. One of these is to use FeedBurner. You can also use MailChimp or Aweber.

8. How can I insert/embed videos into WordPress posts?

You can simply paste the URL of the video you want to insert into your post, while you are in the post editor.

9. Can I create a lightbox pop up in WordPress?

Yes, you can use a plugin called Pippity to do so. It is a paid plugin but it allows you to add a lightbox pop up in WordPress as well as plenty of other features.

10. Is it possible to install WordPress in my PC?

Yes you can and you can also use it for testing. However, the WordPress site or blog you create using your PC will not be visible online, you need to have web hosting for it to be visible online.

11. How can I add an image gallery to my web page?

You can make use of the built in Gallery feature so you can add galleries in your WordPress posts and pages. You can also make use of plugins to help you display galleries with WordPress.

12. Can I create a slider in WordPress?

Yes, and there are several free plugins you can use to create a slider in WordPress. Just type in slider and you can search for the plugins that allow you to create a slider.

13. Can I create a contact form in WordPress?

Yes and there is a free plugin called Contact Form 7 that is great for contact forms. You can also use a plugin called Gravity Forms for this.

14. How can I make money with WordPress?

There’s no exact answer to this question. It really requires you focus on your niche and test a few theories of yours.

15. What theme are you using? Is it available for download?
